What We Do
We are a grower shipper of apples in Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada. We grow, store, pack and market apples for our grower members and others.
Our function is twofold: to continuously improve and maintain the quality and quantity of fruit and to create a more uniform system of packing, storing and marketing fruit on behalf of our member-growers.
Today's consumers expect crisp, juicy apples twelve months a year, regardless of where they live. The Norfolk Fruit Growers' Association meets and exceeds this expectation. Through the years our industry has undergone many revolutionary changes in how we grow, treat, handle and market our apples. One thing, however, remains constant - the Norfolk Fruit Growers' Association's dedication to providing top-quality Ontario apples to our fellow Canadians and to the rest of the world. Over 90 years of expertise, respect for consumer concerns, and a never-ending diligence to improve our product are testament to our success, both now and in the future.
Our association presently boasts 10 active member-growers who collectively ship their apples and pears through our central facilities. Many of them have been with us for four generations, and some for even five! Although the number of members grows successively smaller as time goes on (there were 492 members in 1912, 192 in 1931, 75 in 1956 and 43 in 1980), production has increased dramatically. Today, our member-growers represent 1100 acres of orchard and account for almost 12% of all the apples produced by Ontario's 225 commercial growers.
How We Work Together
Our Association is structured to accommodate members' apples on an individual packout basis, after which the fruit is pooled by variety. After deductions are made for overhead costs, each member receives all the proceeds available from the pool based on a yearly average price per unit for each variety. Members are provided with field containers and other orchard supplies as well as technical information services to ensure a quality product and consistency at every step of production.
